Tuesday morning began with cheer and enthusiasm as 300 students from Solamalai College of Engineering marched from Raja Mutthiah Mandram to Gandhi Museum here educating the public on plastic ban.
The rally witnessed placards and signboards suggesting affordable alternatives to plastic. Deputy Corporation Commissioner P. Manivannan, who flagged off the rally, said that more such awareness campaigns were central to implementation of the State-wide plastic ban scheduled to begin on January 1, 2019.
“It is evident that it takes years to completely destroy a piece of plastic. We see tanks, roads and dustbins choked with plastic causing problems for our future generations. If we create more awareness of the concept of source segregation and provide alternatives to plastic bags, straws and plates (single use plastic), we can do our part in saving the earth,” he said.
Principal A. Subramanian said “To ensure that people get the message, we are going to hold a demonstration on segregation.” Saplings were distributed to students at the end of the rally.
City Health Officer V. Sathish Raghavan initiated a pledge against use of banned plastics.
