Raise voice for ‘Sembaruthis’: Brinda

To drive home her point, she invokes popular TV serial character

CPI(M) Politburo member Brinda Karat has called upon members of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) to stand up and give voice to scores of ‘Sembaruthis’, the servant maid character in a popular Tamil television serial who faced torture and harassment.

Addressing the 16th State conference of the DYFI here on Friday, she said despite being tortured, Sembaruthi remained patient and there were many more such Sembaruthis in the country. The youth should give voice for such hapless women and against capitalistic society, she said.

She said more than 40,000 women were raped in the country in a year and the most shocking fact was that children were raped. It was shameful that the BJP leaders and MPs were blaming women for sexual assaults against them.

Tamil Nadu had the legacy of social reforms, but it was very unfortunate that the State was witnessing ‘honour killings’, she said. She wondered why the Dravidian parties remained passive over ‘honour killings’ and called upon the DYFI to raise its voice and fight for social justice and reforms.

Alleging that the RSS and Sangh Parivar outfits were bent upon dividing the country on religious and communal lines, she said the DYFI cadre and youth should not get cowed down by such forces. They should face the challenge to fight for the future of the country, she stressed.
