Rahul Gandhi calls up party veteran at GRH in Madurai

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi called up veteran party leader A. S. Ponnammal, who is undergoing treatment at the Government Rajaji hospital here, over phone on Wednesday to enquire about her health.

Talking to Ms. Ponnammal and her family members for over three minutes, Mr. Rahul enquired about the treatment given to her and offered to help her in whatever way he could.

According to Jhansi Rani, granddaughter of Ms. Ponnammal, who is the Mahila Congress president of Dindigul district, Mr. Rahul had earlier asked a personal physician to enquire about the treatment and offered to shift the seven-time MLA to Ahmedabad for further treatment. Since the family members expressed satisfaction over the treatment provided at the GRH and the doctor from Delhi also concurred with the opinion of local doctors, Ms. Ponnammal continued to be treated at the GRH.

Mr. Rahul Gandhi has assured to meet her during her visit to New Delhi. Ms. Ponnammal represented Nilakottai, Palani and Sholavandan constituencies.
