Quarry operators restrained from using path on tank

MADURAI

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday restrained stone quarry operators from using a path laid by them on a kanmai (tank) in Aruppukottai in Virudhunagar district for transporting quarried stones.

A Division Bench of Justices T.S. Sivagnanam and R. Tharani directed the Collector to restrain the quarry operators from using the path laid in Ochankulam kanmai.

The petitioner, R. Ramaraj, from Aruppukottai, said that the tank was a source of water for agricultural fields in the nearby areas. During rainy season, water was carried to agricultural fields through a channel. But the path affected water supply, he said.

The petitioner also said that the villagers had earlier petitioned the Collector to remove the encroachment and restore the tank to its original shape.
