The State government has set in motion the process of absorbing members of Tamil Nadu Special Police Youth Brigade (YB) as Grade II constables in Tamil Nadu Special Police battalions.
Tamil Nadu Unformed Services Recruitment Board would conduct a State-level common test on November 29 to select candidates on merit. Interested candidates among 8,500 candidates, who had successfully completed their one-year service training as YB member, would be eligible for taking the test, a police source said. Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had announced the formation of the TNSPYB in the Assembly on October 29, 2012, as a stop-gap arrangement to assist the police in select duties till vacancies in the police constabulary were filled up.
Though the State government wanted to recruit YB members for 10,500 posts, they could select only 10,099 in 2013-14 following a recruitment process of YB, which was similar to the procedure laid down for the recruitment of police constables under the Combined Recruitment Test to the Uniformed Services.
But, only 9,022 YB members reported for training on February 12, 2014. The government had promised to absorb them into the police constabulary after their successful completion of one-year service training. However, the delay in the announcement of absorption and some complaints of “ill-treatment” by police officials saw few members of YB leaving their job for which they were paid a consolidated pay.
The district police units and police commissionerates have been asked to circulate application forms for written examination to all the police stations and units where YB members have been deputed.
