Union Minister of State for Shipping Pon. Radhakrishnan on Friday filed his nomination for contesting from the Kanniyakumari Lok Sabha constituency.

The sitting BJP MP of the constituency, who had declared assets to the tune of ₹4.19 crore in the affidavit he had filed in 2014, has now declared movable and immovable assets worth ₹7.49 crore, an increase of ₹ 3.30 crore. He has declared movable assets worth ₹50.56 lakh, deposits of ₹50.07 lakh and ₹ 48,580 in cash and immovable assets worth ₹ 6.99 crore, including cultivable and arid lands and commercial building.

Earlier, after offering special prayers at Mondaicaud Bhagavathi Amman Temple, Mr. Radhakrishnan sought the blessings of Swami Chaithanyanandha at Vellimalai Ashram and Bishop of Kottar RC Diocese Most Rev. Nazarene Soosai before filing the nomination to Collector and Returning Officer Prashant M. Wadnere, along with local leaders of alliance parties.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Radhakrishnan said the Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre had sanctioned several development schemes for the district, which had been ignored by the successive Union Governments in the past. Though the district had elected in the past Congress candidates repeatedly, the district did not get any development project.

“We’ve done justice to the constituency that reposed faith in us… We’ll tell the people the work we’ve done over the past five years and seek their support. Since we’ve been good servants to the people of Kanniyakumari, it is quite natural that their expectation will be more this time and we’ll fulfil their anticipation,” Mr. Radhakrishnan said.

Mr. Radhakrishnan said there was no case pending against him.

On Friday, five candidates - 3 independents namely Manikandan, Praveen Kumar, and Pridon and two party candidates - S. Sivashankaran of Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party and Sathya of Naam Thamizhar Katchi -filed their nomination for Tirunelveli constituency while only one candidate – Mathivanan of Naam Thamizhar Katchi - submitted the nomination for Tenkasi (Reserved) segment.

In Thoothukudi, two independents filed their nominations to Collector Sandeep Nanduri on Friday.

Since Saturday and Sunday (March 23 and 24) are holidays, there will be no filing of nominations on these days.
