Police recovered 43 brand new mobile phone sets from two juvenile offenders here on Monday.
Following a series of complaints from mobile phone showroom managers of either thefts or attempts to steal from their shops, Inspector General and Commissioner of Police Sanjay Mathur directed the police to register a case. A team comprising Tallakulam Inspector of Police (Crime) E. Nagarajan, Sub-Inspectors of Police Ravi, Mayandi and Lokeswari were formed.
Investigations revealed that the miscreants had burgled mobile phones from a showroom on Alagarkoil Road in Tallakulam and from a shop in Goripalayam on April 20 and 25 respectively. Based on details available in the stolen phone sets, the special team zeroed in on the culprits after locating the transmission tower.
When a special team rushed to Manamadurai, they realised that the accused were juveniles and that they had gained entry into the shops by breaking open the asbestos-roof and lifted the handsets.
A total of 43 mobile phone sets valued at over Rs 1.25 lakh were seized. Discreet probe with the two also suggested that they had committed a similar crime in the same modus operandi in Othakadai in Madurai district and had served punishment period for some months ago at a correctional home, a press release said.
