An Inspector of Police was caught red-handed while allegedly accepting Rs 3,000 as bribe from a petitioner to release his vehicle which was stolen and later recovered by police near here on Wednesday.

The police said two vehicles went missing under Villur police station limits in January 2014.

The vehicles were recovered from Surandai in Tirunelveli district in September 2014.

Court order

A court in December 2014 allowed the owner of one of the vehicles to take possession of it from the police.

However, when the complainant, Karthigai Selvan, approached the police seeking release of his vehicle, T. Kallupatti Circle Inspector of Police Pathamuthu reportedly demanded Rs 3,000 as bribe.

Trap

Based on a complaint filed by Karthigai Selvan, the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption sleuths, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Esakkianandan, laid a trap and arrested Pathamuthu after he reportedly accepted the money at T. Kallupatti police station.
