The All-Woman Police Station, Theni, has registered a case of rape against Kathirkamu, a contestant in Periyakulam Assembly by-election from the AMMK, on Tuesday.

As the news spread in the social media, the police registered the case after obtaining a complaint from the victim. Dr. Kathirkamu told reporters that the case was foisted by political opponents and there was not even an iota of truth in the allegation. “A similar issue cropped up some three years ago and it has come again,” he noted.

Charging that the AIADMK and Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam were behind the complaint, he said that the AIADMK had been apprehensive of losing the poll. “In a bid to defame my party, they had made such an attempt. I will face it legally,” he added.

He also dismissed the statements that said he was absconding. “I am very much present in the constituency seeking votes,” he claimed. The AMMK’s Theni Lok Sabha constituency candidate Thanga Tamilselvam was also present.

AIADMK functionaries in Periyakulam said that Dr. Kathirkamu had been having an affair and their party (AIADMK) had nothing to do with registration of the case.

A senior police officer said that they had registered a case under IPC Sections 376, 417 and 506 (1). Further investigation is on.
