The need to bring large-scale industries to Madurai to improve the local economy was highlighted at a meeting organised by Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (MADITSSIA) here to discuss issues related to GST on Wednesday.

President of MADITSSIA K. P. Murugan said that one of the Navratna public sector undertakings should open a unit here to provide more jobs. “Large-scale companies producing electric and electronic goods will provide more jobs with big investments,” he said.

The president suggested that uniforms for the defence forces could be procured from the garment units of southern districts. “This will help the growth of micro and small industries,” he said.

BJP’s State secretary R. Srinivasan, who was present at the meeting, said that the party would take up the demands with the Union Finance Ministry ahead of the budget. He also explained the funding pattern for the proposed AIIMS at Thoppur near here.
