A public interest litigation petition filed before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Friday sought a direction for excavation and scientific research at Iravimangalam in Palani.

The petitioner, V. Narayanmoorthy of Dindigul, an archaeologist, claimed that Iravimangalam was a place of historic significance and if the authorities concerned could conduct an excavation and a scientific research at the site, it could lead to an insight into the history and culture of Tamils. He claimed that the site was as important as Adichanallur, Porundal and Kodumanal.

A Division Bench of Justices K. K. Sasidharan and P. D. Audikesavalu directed notice to Department of Archaeology and adjourned the case for further hearing.
