A public interest litigation has been filed at the Madras High Court Bench here seeking to control the stray dog menace in the city.
Petitioner C. Ezhilarasu, an advocate, contended that the district collector and corporation commissioner should be directed to administer “fatal injection” to the dogs afflicted by rabies in order to control the dog menace.
Citing statistics, the petitioner claimed there are 18,500 stray dogs in the city and that there is only one vehicle to transport them to the sterlization and vaccination centre in Sellur. Only 692 dogs were sterlized and vaccinated in the last two months.
Besides the number of professional dog catchers in the city is not adequate, he claimed.
He further said that the public poisoned several rabies-affected dogs in Madurai and that the decomposed remains of such dogs caused health problems.
The officials should be directed to take action to control the menace, he prayed. A division bench comprising Justices Chitra Venkataraman and S. Vimala have ordered notice to the collector and corporation commissioner. The case has been adjourned by two weeks.
