Congress cadre assaulted a photo journalist of a weekly Tamil magazine while he was taking photographs of the empty chairs at a public meeting organised to explain the Congress manifesto, here on Saturday night.

The photographer, R.M. Muthuraj, has been admitted to a private hospital here.

He said that a few party members attacked him as he was taking photographs of the empty chairs at the meeting in which TNCC president, K.S. Alagiri, party candidate for Virudhunagar Lok Sabha constituency, B. Manickam Tagore, and DMK MLA, Thangam Thennarasu, took part.

However, journalists present at the scene came to the rescue of the victim.

A journalist said that Mr. Tagore rushed the injured to the hospital in his vehicle and also expressed regret for the act of the party cadre.
