Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) candidates securing sizeable votes in the Lok Sabha election and Assembly by-election in Tamil Nadu had clearly indicated that people were looking for alternatives to the Dravidian parties and the Congress, Mr. Karti Chidhambaram said here on Thursday.

Thanking leaders of alliance parties for securing him a resounding victory from Sivaganga Lok Sabha constituency, Mr. Karti said established political parties would have a tough time if they failed to meet the aspirations of people, especially the youth. The NTK and the MNM together got more than one lakh votes in almost all parliamentary constituencies, he said.

He said the overwhelming victory of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Front in Tamil Nadu was a victory for the front and not for candidates as people solidly stood behind the alliance to overthrow the BJP-led government at the Centre.

The leaders of the parties in the front should not think that the votes polled by individual candidates were from the vote bank of the front or constituent parties.

In every constituency, 1.5 lakh to 2 lakh people, who had no political affiliations, voted for the DMK-led front. They had voted for the AIADMK in the 2014 elections, he said.
