MADURAI
The State on Tuesday informed the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court that the court’s direction to pay old age pension to a destitute woman from Ramanathapuram district was complied with.
Justice R. Suresh Kumar took note of the submission that ₹ 1.08 lakh was paid to K. Sundarammal from Ramanathapuram district towards arrears of old age pension along with interest. Also, ₹ 50,000 as compensation was paid to the woman as per the order of the court, for denying her the pension in the first place.
Earlier, the HC Bench had expressed shock over how old age pension to K. Sundarammal from Kamuthi was abruptly stopped, assuming that she was dead. It was said that after a temporary computer operator had erroneously deleted her name from the list of beneficiaries, the pension was stopped.
However, even after the woman sent a representation to the authorities concerned to resume payment of pension, officials asked the woman to apply afresh. Therefore, she filed a petition before the court seeking relief.
