Coast Guard Region (East) Commander Rajan Bargotra said that two new patrol vessels would be pressed into service soon.
After inaugurating a new administrative building here on Tuesday, he said the new building would help the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) staff to stay here. Though the station came up three decades ago, there was a need to provide space for the personnel who have been providing logistical and administrative support to ships.
He said the station has great strategic importance. “It is located in a prime location, close to the sea line of communication for ships that pass through the southern tip of the Indian peninsula.”
A Coast Guard air station would come up in the next two years after the land acquisition. It would not only help in surveillance but also assist fishermen, he said.
ICG Station Commander S.B. Venkatesh presided over the event.

Arunshakthikumar and Tirunelveli Deputy Commissioner of Police Sugna Singh were present.
