Panchayat president accused of blocking sewage channel

May 19, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - MADURAI:

Dalits from Meenakshipuram panchayat alleged that the sewage channel which was used by them had been blocked on purpose by the panchayat president and submitted a petition at the Collectorate on Monday.

Stating that the sewage channel was connected to their houses for the last 60 years, they claimed that the panchayat president brought heavy equipment and blocked the drain by filling it up with gravel and mud. “As there was no proper outlet there, water has stagnated in our area and affected a school, temple and community tap where people go to get drinking water,” alleged M. Senthilkumar, a resident.

They demanded strict action be taken against the panchayat president and the drain be made functional again.
