Over 4,000 laptops distributed to students

A total of 4,264 Corporation school students in Madurai received laptops for the academic year 2019-20 from the School Education Department here on Saturday.

Distributing laptops costing ₹4.43 crore to the students, Minister for Cooperation Sellur K. Raju, said that till date over 42.97 lakh laptops had been distributed throughout the State. In Madurai district, around 1.85 lakh laptops had been distributed, he said.

“Various initiatives of the State government, including the laptop scheme, has helped the State to attain a Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) of 48.6 in higher education,” said the Minister.

Madurai Corporation schools were conducting special coaching class for students who had topped class 10 examinations, he said.

Students had in the past protested against the district administration for not issuing laptops for those who had completed their school education in 2017-18. “Within a month, laptops will be given to the students who have passed out in 2018,” says Chief Educational Officer, Madurai Corporation, P. Vijaya.

Corporation Commissioner S. Visakan, Member of Parliament Su. Venkatesan and Chief Educational Officer R. Swaminathan also participated in the event.
