Inspecting the eastern parts of Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple complex, Bharatiya Janata Party State president Tamilisai Soundararajan said history would be lost if Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department continued their inefficient management of temples.

On February 2, a fire engulfed most parts of Veera Vasantha Rayar Mandapam where over 40 shops were located. After inspection, Mrs. Soundararajan said management of temples must be handed over to devout indiéviduals. She said that the committee should consist of theists.

She emphasised the need for creating a temple protection committee and probe the cause of the fire. She said the State government was inefficient as it had still not nailed the reason behind the incident. “It is appalling to see that so many shops on the premises sold plastic articles. Is this how we protect our cultural icons?” she said.
