One Billion Rising rally held

As part of the global One Billion Rising campaign against violence on women and girls, scores of women participated in a rally organised by a Madurai-based non-governmental organisation, Ekta Resource Centre for Women, here on Sunday.

The rally, which began at Tamil Annai statue near Tamukkam Ground, ended at the open air auditorium in Gandhi Museum with a balloon flying ceremony. Later, the Director of Ekta Resource Centre for Women, elaborated on the global campaign and the theme of ‘Rise for Revolution’ taken up this year.

Schoolgirls, who won the elocution competition, ‘Importance of Women’s Education,’ organised by the Ekta in two Corporation schools earlier this month, were awarded prizes during the function.

In accordance with this year’s theme of One Billion Rising campaign and highlighting the various kinds of issues faced by marginalised women, a cultural programme was presented by the students. The participants took a pledge against violence on women and girls.
