MADURAI
Madurai Corporation has announced that drinking water will be supplied to residents of old wards once in four days from July 17 owing to insufficient rainfall and depleting water level in Vaigai dam.
“This measure has been planned to tide over any possible drinking water shortage as water level in the dam has dipped below 30 feet. This arrangement will be in place for a maximum of two months and the regular supply of water will be resumed as and when the storage improves with good rainfall,” says City Engineer S. Arasu.
The Corporation currently draws 115 MLD of water from Vaigai dam and supplies it on alternate days. From July 17, 81 MLD will be distributed once in four days.
This arrangement will help the Corporation draw water for an additional 30 days with the given storage in Vaigai dam, the prime source of water for the 72 old wards of the city. However, the 28 newly added wards, will continue to get alternate-day supply through the Cauvery Combined Drinking Water Project. The Corporation has an alternative plan of drawing water from borewells and infiltration wells to meet the drinking water requirement of the city, if the monsoon fails.
