Madurai Corporation ropes in private players to give facelift to roundabouts

Message in its belly: This metal dinosaur near Kakkan statue junction in K.K. Nagar will soon have plastic waste in its belly to create awareness of plastic eradication.

Five traffic islands at the junction of Ambedkar Salai, Dr. Thangaraj Salai and Racecourse Road in K.K. Nagar here sport a snazzy look after the completion of beautification work undertaken by a private bank.

The facelift and the maintenance of these traffic islands have been undertaken by Tamilnad Mercantile Bank at a cost of about ₹4 lakh. City Engineer S. Arasu said these were among many roundabouts in Madurai getting a facelift by private players.

These traffic islands have been landscaped with lawn grass and ornamental flowers. A colourful fountain is also present at one of the islands. E. Andrew Selvakumar, the contractor of the project, said the fountain would function for two hours each in the morning and evening.

Attractive LED neon lights have been placed along the railings of a traffic island.

A metal model of dinosaur has been erected at one of the islands.

“Plastic bags will be placed inside the stomach of the dinosaur model and a board will be placed near it to create awareness of plastic eradication,” said Mr. Selvaraj. Another island sports a parrot model.
