With copious water in all major tanks, there will not be a drinking water problem in the district this summer, said Collector L. Subramanian.

Speaking to reporters here on Monday, he said that major tanks, including Madakulam, Sellur and Vandiyur, had received good amount of inflow. Following comfortable storage in Sellur tank, the water table in Sellur had risen. In dry areas also, water conservation efforts had resulted in aquifers getting recharged, he said.

There would not be any problem on the drinking water front in the Madurai Corporation area, Mr. Subramanian said.

However, at the grievance meeting, villagers from Kinnimangalam staged a demonstration, protesting that the borewell in their hamlet had gone dry and that they had to walk all the way to a nearby village to fetch water.
