Even as nine teachers have been placed under suspension in the district in the wake of ongoing indefinite strike by the teachers and the government employees, over 2,000 candidates have submitted their application for the post of temporary teachers in the government schools.

As functioning of the government and the aided-schools across the district has been badly hit ever since the strike commenced, the Department of School Education has directed the Chief Educational Officers to recruit temporary teachers to be posted in the affected schools with the consolidated pay of ₹ 10,000 a month in a bid to manage the worsening situation.

Standing in a long queue in front of the District Educational Offices at Tirunelveli, Cheranmahadevi, Tenkasi, Valliyoor and Sankarankovil, the candidates, mostly women, submitted their applications.

“We received over 1,300 applications on Saturday and Sunday,” said Chief Educational Officer Bala.
