Nine fake liquor units detected in 2013: ADGP

The Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW) has registered a total of 74,128 cases and arrested over 75,000 persons in the State till October 2013, Additional Director General of Police (Enforcement), C.K. Gandhirajan, has said.

After participating in a meeting along with the Commissioner of Prohibition and Excise, Malik Feroze Khan, and other officials, Mr. Gandhirajan said in a statement that the PEW had detected nine fake liquor units functioning in Villupuram, Kanchipuram, Thanjavur, Tiruvallur and Tiruppur districts.

The police also seized spirit, arrack from Puducherry and fake bottle caps, labels and also bottles. The accused were booked under the Goondas Act, the statement said.

The police seized Rs.2.44 crore worth arrack from neighbouring States, Rs. 4.16 lakh worth toddy, Rs. 1.32 crore worth spirit and 1,628 vehicles during the year.

The ADGP instructed the officials to intensify checks at the inter-State border check posts in Theni, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts to prevent smuggling of liquor, spirit and illicit liquor from neighbouring States.

People can tip off the police over toll-free telephone number 10581 about brewing of illicit arrack, tapping of toddy, manufacturing of illicit liquor, smuggling and hoarding of spirit, liquor from neighbouring States and irregularities at TASMAC shops and bars.

The details of informants would be kept secret and they would be rewarded for providing useful information, the statement said.

Subbulaksmi (Enforcement), PEW officials and TASMAC managers, Assistant Commissioners of Excise Department from south zone participated.
