Collector Sandeep Nanduri on Monday said the visit of National Green Tribunal-appointed panel, formed to investigate Vedanta’s plea challenging the closure order issued by the State government against Sterlite Copper, had been delayed.

He said the panel, which was to arrive last week, could not make it owing to the health concerns of former Meghalaya High Court Chief Justice Tarun Agrawal. The new date of the panel’s arrival had not been intimated yet, he added.

He said two persons in Kappikulam, where people feared spread of a mysterious disease, had been diagnosed with typhoid. “The man from Kappikulam who died (on Sunday) was severely diabetic,” he said. No other cases of other diseases such as chikungunya or malaria had been detected.

Mr. Nanduri said the situation was being monitored closely and steps to improve hygiene and sanitation in the area taken.

He said construction of a flyover near VVD signal in the city had been delayed as three persons had gone on appeal against the order of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court setting aside their petition against the flyover construction.

He said talks would be held with traders and others who were opposing construction of a subway and a flyover at First Gate and Second Gate across the railway line. “The projects are important to ensure the safety of people,” he said.
