Arun Balagopalan, a 2013 batch IPS officer, took charge as the new Superintendent of Police, Thoothukudi, on Saturday.

Mr. Arun, who previously served as the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic, in Madurai, assumed office as the 30th SP of the district. He was given a warm welcome by fellow police personnel.

Meanwhile, his predecessor, Murali Rambha, would be going on Central deputation.

Answering queries from reporters regarding the traffic situation in the town, he said that number of vehicles was increasing in all cities, and action would be taken to streamline them. “Now, there is more realisation regarding the importance of road safety,” he added.

He said that further action would be taken after studying the prevailing situation in the district.
