Nellai Press Club meeting hall sealed

TIRUNELVELI

The meeting hall of Nellai Press Club on the Collectorate campus was sealed on Monday night after the press meet of a political party was organised when the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) is in force.

When All India Congress Committee secretary and Tamil Nadu in-charge Sanjay Dutt was about to address the media on Monday afternoon, Public Relations Officer Senthil asked the Nellai Press Club office-bearers to shift the venue as MCC for Lok Sabha poll was in force.

Since similar press meets were conducted in the past even as MCC was in force, there was no harm in organising the press meet at the press club, the office-bearers replied. Mr. Sanjay Dutt’s press meet was conducted as planned.

Meanwhile, Chief Electoral Officer Satyabrata Sahoo, on reportedly receiving a complaint in this connection, asked District Election Officer and Collector Shilpa Prabhakar Satish to probe the issue. Palayamkottai Tahsildar Kanagaraj, who was subsequently deputed to probe the matter, met the press club office-bearers and sought their explanation.

As their replies were not satisfactory, the meeting hall in the first floor of Nellai Press Club was sealed at 8.15 p.m. by Mr. Kanagaraj with police protection.
