NCC training facility coming up

National Cadet Corps training centre, being established at Idayapatti near here, would start functioning by March, said Officiating Officer Commanding Lt Col Gajendra Singh of 4 (TN) Engineer Company NCC.

Speaking to The Hindu during the 67{+t}{+h}NCC Raising Day celebration here, Mr. Singh said that the centre, a first of its kind facility for the State, would have shooting ranges and obstacle courses and advanced facilities such as simulators for firing.

While the other facilities were part of the initial plan for the centre, the simulators and a language lab were announced recently by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.

Sources from 4 (TN) Engineer Company NCC said that the building being constructed through Sports and Youth Welfare Department of Tamil Nadu was coming on an outlay of Rs. 12.63 crore on a land measuring 7.5 acres.

Mr. Singh said that while many other States had dedicated training centres for NCC, Tamil Nadu lacked one. “We have been conducting our training camps in one of the educational institutions where it is not possible to arrange all facilities needed for training,” he added.

According to him, the centre can accommodate 500 to 600 cadets in separate hostels for boys and girls during camps, apart from trainers and administrative personnel from the NCC.

He said that the training centre would be beneficial not only for the Madurai Group of NCC but also for other groups in Tamil Nadu.
