‘More focus must be on revival of Vaigai under Smart Cities Mission’

There must be more focus on reviving and conserving the Vaigai and its chain of tanks under the Smart Cities Mission, said G. Balaji, Professor and Conservation Architect, Thiagarajar College of Engineering, here on Tuesday.

He was speaking during the AsiaConstruct 2019, a two-day international conference to discuss the opportunities and challenges in creating smart cities, which commenced on Tuesday. Mr. Balaji stressed that the internet of things (IoT) and information and communication technology (ICT) platforms must explore and monitor environmental aspects under the Smart Cities Mission.

He also emphasised that the focus must be on the revival of the Vaigai and not merely the beautification of the banks along the river.

Mridula Ramesh, the founder of the Sundaram Climate Institute, said that climate change would be a major issue that the construction industry would have to tackle in the future.

“The engineers must design buildings in such a way to adapt to climate change and take steps to mitigate emissions,” she said.

While Madurai city produced around 250 MLD (million litres a day) of sewage each day, only 30% of it was being treated at sewage treatment plants, said S. Rajamohan, Managing Director of Enviro Care India.

“Over 150 MLD of untreated sewage is let into the ground, which results in contamination of groundwater. So the focus must be on the four R's- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover,” he said.
