The Madurai Medical College (MMC) has received permission from the Medical Council of India (MCI) to introduce eight higher speciality courses. A total of nine diploma courses will also be converted into degree courses henceforth.

Dean of MMC S. Vanitha said that the MCI gave the the letter of permission to begin the higher speciality courses due to the increased number of referral cases from nearby districts and primary health centres. “The Tamil Nadu government asked us to send a proposal as the number of referrals were increasing. We got the approval after the MCI team visited our institution two months back for inspection,” she said.

Doctor of Medicine courses in Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Medical Oncology and Master of Surgery in Surgical Gastroenterology, Urology, Vascular Surgery, Surgical Oncology and Endocrinology have been approved.

The Dean said that the inspection team checked available infrastructure, including beds and equipment. “They mostly checked if the high end procedures performed here were on par with national standards. This is a big boon to the [Government Rajaji] hospital,” she said.

She added that degrees in Anaesthesia, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Dermatology, Radio Diagnosis, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology and Orthopaedics would be awarded henceforth.
