Madurai (Central) MLA P.T.R.P. Thiagarajan inaugurated an anganwadi, renovated under MLA Constituency Development Fund, near Avvai Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School (ward 84) here on Thursday.

The anganwadi, which has been renovated at a cost of ₹7 lakh, was earlier located inside the Corporation hospital adjacent to the school. Vijaya Nalini, Child Development Protection Officer, said that when the anganwadi was functioning from inside the hospital, children had the risk of contracting infections.

Explaining the importance of anganwadis in providing nutrition to children and women, Mr. Thiagarajan said that this was the seventh anganwadi inaugurated under his MLA Constituency Development Fund in the last three years. “My focus has always been on renovating anganwadis, as they are essential in catering to the nutritional needs of poor children,” he said.

Ms. Nalini said that 14 children were currently enrolled in the facility. “At present, nutritional supplements are also provided to 21 pregnant women and nine post-natal mothers,” she said.

B. Balumani, Assistant Headmaster of Avvai Corporation Girls HSS, submitted a petition to the MLA seeking a borewell at the school. The MLAsaid that immediate action would be taken in this regard.

After inaugurating the anganwadi, the MLA distributed sweets to children.
