Last year, the Madurai Kamaraj University announced a one-time offer for old students from batches up to April 2008, who failed to graduate due to failure in one or more papers, to clear the backlogs in their old syllabus.
According to a public notification issued by the university, the students were asked to pay a fee of ₹ 1,000 (for undergraduate students) and ₹ 2,000 (for post-graduate and M. Phil students) apart from the regular examination fee for every paper to appear for the exam. The notification said that the examination would be conducted in November, 2017.
However, with more than eight months gone, students who paid the fee, allege that they had been kept in the dark with no information on when the examinations will be conducted.
R. Sivachandran, a 2008 batch Bachelors of Business Administration student in an affiliated college of MKU, who is presently involved in crackers business, said that he had failed to clear two subjects.
“Though I failed to clear at that time, I now realize that having a degree will really be an advantage. So, when the announcement came, I was really happy and paid the examination fee soon after. However, I have not heard back from MKU since then,” he alleged.
Another 2006 batch student from an affiliated college of MKU, who failed to clear three subjects, said that there was no clarity on the examinations despite multiple enquiries with the university. “Last time I checked, they said that the exams will be in the second week of July. Since I am involved in business, I refused to accept new orders to keep myself free. But the examinations did not happen,” he alleged.
Acknowledging that around 1,200 students have applied for the examinations, a senior official from the university said that certain practical difficulties were delaying the process. “We have to set question papers as per the old syllabus, which we need to get from the Board of Studies of all the departments,” he said.
Stating that there were delays in publishing the regular results this year, the official said that the Examinations section was focussing on that till now. “We will shift our focus on this backlog examinations now. Timetable can be expected within this month,” he said.
