The Additional Controller of Examinations’ (ACE) office in Madurai Kamaraj University has been stripped of almost all its powers following a decision to constitute an investigation into serious allegations of corruption and irregularities against the present ACE M. Rajarajan and his office.

A recent circular sent by MKU’s Registrar V. Chinniah, made available to The Hindu , said that the ACE must send all files from the Directorate of Distance Education related to examinations henceforth to the Controller of Examinations (CoE).

It said that files related to assigning persons for setting question papers, valuation of answer sheets, and conduct of examinations must be initiated by the CoE and not ACE.

Importantly, the circular said that though ACE office can continue to prepare mark statements and provisional certificates, they must be sent subsequently to the office of CoE for affixing of facsimile signatures and to verify if fee had been paid by the students. It can be noted that majority of the allegations levelled were related to issuance of certificates.

During the Syndicate meeting held on February 5, 2019, a resolution was passed to constitute a committee headed by a retired judge to investigate complaints of corruption and other irregularities against Mr. Rajarajan and his office. He was appointed as ACE in October 2017 during the tenure of former Vice-Chancellor P.P. Chellathurai.

The university has also written to all the study centres and information centres coming under the DDE to inform them that all matters related to examinations will be looked after by the CoE until further notice. It has directed all the centres to direct their grievances to the CoE.
