Mayor seeks funds from Finance Commission

December 17, 2013 11:09 am | Updated 11:09 am IST - MADURAI:

Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa sought financial support for operation and maintenance of underground sewerage and solid waste management systems in the city at the 14 Finance Commission meeting held in Chennai on Monday. According to a release issued here, the Mayor had sought funds to dispose of waste scientifically and according to the Pollution Control Board norms.

He asked the Commission to reduce the financial sharing of the project by the urban local body to 10 per cent as the project cost was more than its financial capacity.

Observing that the implementation of most of the projects got delayed as the local bodies were required to get clearance from several public sector departments such as the railways, National Highways Authority of India and Airport Authority of India, the Mayor urged the Centre to set up a single window clearance system for all projects being executed with the financial assistance of the government for their timely completion.
