An unidentified gang broke open seven hundis at the famous Sri Kamatchi Amman Temple in Devadhanapatti, near here, and robbed the cash and silverware on Saturday night.
After inquiring the temple watchman, the police said that the four accused (all covered their faces with a mask) tied hands and legs of the watchman and rolled him down near the temple. One of the robbers placed knife on his neck and warned not to shout. In the meanwhile, three other robbers broke temple gates and all seven hundis and collected the cash and jewels.
Later, they broke open the office room lock and robbed silver items weighing around three kilograms kept in the almirah. But they neglected a cloth bag in the almirah, which helped the administration save precious gold jewels. (They normally keep all gold jewels in a cloth bag and place it in some corner of the bureau.)
(The hundi collection during temple festivals was around Rs.3 to Rs.5 lakh every year, according to temple sources.) The police rushed to the spot and conducted an inquiry.
