The marine police of Tamil Nadu Coastal Security Group (CSG) celebrated its silver jubilee by launching awareness campaign on coastal security and organising competitions for school students at Devipattinam near here on Monday.
Seeking to sensitise students in coastal hamlets on the importance of coastal security, the marine police of CSG organised oratorical, essay and drawing competitions on the role of CSG in India’s security.
The competitions were also organised to enlighten the students, mostly hailing from fishing hamlets about the functioning of the marine police, which prevented smuggling, illegal activities and intrusions via the sea routes, said Felix Suresh Peter, Inspector of Police, CSG.
Coastal security has assumed greater significance after the infamous Mumbai terror attacks in 2008, when terrorists from Pakistan landed in Mumbai via the sea route. After the incident, the TN CSG had enhanced coastal security and mounted surveillance in coordination with Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard, the marine police personnel said.
Students – both boys and girls – participated in the competitions and the first three winners from each category were awarded prizes at the function held at the school. School headmaster Sakthivel, assistant headmaster Jayakumar, Sub Inspector of Police (Devipattinam Marine Police) G. Ayyanar and environment coordinator Vijayakumar participated in the event.
