An accused who was in custody of a police team from Andaman and Nicobar Islands gave a slip here on Friday.

Police said that Veeramani (50) of Rasipuram in Salem district used to visit Andaman Islands and commit crimes such as chain snatching, robbery and house breaks and return home. Police investigation led to his arrest in Rasipuram.

He had reportedly confessed to the police that he had sold the valuables to a pawn broker in Madurai.

Following this, the team brought Veeramani here and stayed in a lodge near Periyar bus stand. When the policemen were fast asleep, he managed to escape. After searching for him, the Andaman police lodged a complaint with the Thideer Nagar police.

Another escape

In another incident of a similar kind, an accused, who figured in kidnap crimes in Kerala, was brought to Madurai by the Kochi police for recording his statements. He escaped from the police. He had confessed to the Kerala police that he kidnapped women from his hometown and kept them in a lodge here.
