The Fast Track Mahila court has awarded life sentence to a 41-year-old man, an auto-rickshaw driver after convicting him on charges of murdering his wife after she questioned his extra-marital affair.

Passing orders on the more than six-year-old case, Mahila court judge T. Bhagavathiammal awarded life sentence to the accused S. Kaleeswaran of Sivagnanapuram near here after convicting him under sections 302 (murder) and 506 (i) (criminal intimidation) of Indian Penal Code, holding that the prosecution proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.

The judge also imposed a fine of ₹2,000, failing which, the accused should undergo imprisonment for six more months and the sentence would go concurrently. With the award of life sentence to the accused, his 11-year-old son and six-year-old daughter became orphans.

The prosecution said the girl was six months old when the accused murdered his wife Pushpavalli, 31, on May 26, 2012. The prosecution case was that the accused, who married Pushpavalli in 2003, developed an illicit affair with a widow and had eloped with her in 2010.

Acting on a complaint lodged by Pushpavalli, the Kenimarai police had traced him at Erode. After rejoining the family, he had frequent quarrels with his wife, who abused him for having an illicit affair and fought with him for not giving enough money to run the family, the prosecution said. On the fateful night, he murdered his wife by hitting her with a wooden log after a quarrel, the prosecution said.
