Importance of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) accreditation and the eligibility criteria for funding from the government were discussed at a workshop that was held recently for government colleges in southern districts at Madurai Kamaraj University.
The workshop was jointly organised by the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), the National Higher Education Mission’s Tamil Nadu State Project Directorate, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU).
Tamil Nadu RUSA Project Directorate Project Manager B.S. Vijayalakshmi spoke on the importance of NAAC accreditation, the eligibility criteria for funding from the government, measuring the quality and recognition of the institution.
NAAC Advisor B.S. Ponmudiraj explained the possibility of provisional accreditation by the colleges in the initial stages. Research Officer of RUSA Tamil Nadu State Project Directorate Vanathi Vembar said that 34 of about 150 government colleges in the State got accredited so far and the Higher Education Department was working on the modalities to ensure government colleges attain accreditation.
Joint Director of Collegiate Education, Madurai, P. Ponmuthu Ramalingam, appreciated the efforts of the State Project Directorate in reaching all the 150 colleges of the State through a series of workshops. Madurai Kamaraj University Coordinator of RUSA G. Kumaresan highlighted the challenges and opportunities in the process of accreditation and the experience.
