In a span of 24 hours since Sunday night, Madurai witnessed four murders, including the murder of K. Veeranan, 45, a loyalist of former Union Minister M.K. Alagiri, allegedly due to personal enmity, on Monday morning near Palamedu.
Of the other three murders, one was reported in South Gate police station limits in Madurai city while the other two were reported in Nagamalai Pudukottai police station limits.
According to the police, Veeranan was hacked to death by a four-member gang when he was returning to his home in Chathira Vellalapatti after having tea at a shop. He had previously served as panchayat president of the village, police sources said. Palamedu police, who have registered a case, are on the lookout for one Jothimani and Chinnasamy for their alleged involvement in the murder.
V. Satheeshkumar, a 17-year-old boy from Kiruthumal Nadhi Road in Madurai, who had come home for Deepavali from Tirupur where he was working, was murdered by a five-member gang. The incident happened on Sunday night near NMR bridge near South Gate when the youngster was speaking with his friend. The gang stabbed him and slit his throat, killing him on the spot. His mother has alleged that he was killed by one Muthu alias Surya and his friends over dispute in borrowing money. South Gate police are investigating.
Sixty-year-old K. Nithyanandam, who was working as a security guard in a heavy vehicle body building unit in Nagamalai Pudukkottai, was found murdered at his workplace on Monday morning with his throat slit and hands and legs tied. Nagamalai Pudukkottai police, who are investigating the murder, said that the motive and the accused were yet to be ascertained.
Another murder was also reported in Nagamalai Pudukkottai police limits on Monday afternoon, in which K. Thangavel, 30, allegedly stabbed his mother K. Boopathy, 50, at their house over a family dispute.
