The ongoing renovation work at Madurai railway junction, which includes a new foot overbridge, an elevator, and a number of other components, prove to be very challenging, said Divisional Railway Manager Neenu Ittyerah here on Thursday.
In her acceptance speech after receiving ‘Women Chief Executive Officer Excellence Award’ from Madurai Management Association (MMA), she said that, apart from resource and time constraints, the project was particularly challenging since all the work had to be done while causing minimal inconvenience to passengers. Pointing that Madurai was a busy station, she said various measures, including phasing the execution of different components of the project, were taken to minimise the inconvenience. Still, inconvenience to some extent could not be avoided.
The renovation project also included a revamp of circulating area, premium parking, widening of bus bay, entry and exit points, and a new entry point to the first platform. The facade of the main building was also being altered to reflect the heritage of Madurai, she said.
Earlier, the MMA office-bearers had said the award was given to Ms. Ittyerah for the officer’s role in executing the project to give a facelift to Madurai junction. Thanking the organisation for the award, she said it was not for her alone, but for all the employees, contractors and other stakeholders involved in the project. “There is nothing you can do on your own except introspection,” she said.
She said a person playing the role of a leader in an organisation must know the work of his subordinates. “If you do not know that, your subordinates will not respect you,” she said.
Ms. Ittyerah appealed to the students, who attended the function, to seek internship in government offices as they could gain valuable management lessons.
M. Shunmugasundaram, president and CEO, MMA, and G. Suresh, honorary secretary, also spoke.
