The Railway ministry has awarded second prize to Madurai railway station in a national-level contest on beautification of the premises .

According to officials, Divisional Railway Manager Neenu Ittyerah and her team proposed to beautify Madurai, Virudhunagar and Kovilpatti station premises with paintings, sculptures and murals for the contest.

Artist A. Kannan from Madurai painted the face of escalator and side wall of the staircase with the theme of rural Tamil Nadu. Another Madurai artist G.K. Ramesh used Tanjore style in his paintings and depicted the famous celestial wedding of Goddess Meenakshi and Sundareswarar in the AC waiting hall.

At a function held in New Delhi, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal presented the awards, which included cash and appreciation certificates, to the winners. According to a press release, 62 entries from 11 railway zones were received by the Railway Board. A booklet containing photographs of all the stations which were beautified was released on the occasion.
