Bridge to be constructed over Kuruvikkaran causeway

A surplus budget for Madurai Corporation was tabled here on Friday.

Presenting it, Commissioner, S. Visakan, said that added areas of the civic body would be given special focus. Later, speaking to reporters, he said that basic needs such as drinking water, underground drainage and solid waste management would be ensured in these areas.

The total income of the was put at ₹ 2,303.14 crore and total expenditure ₹ 2,301.54 crore, bringing the surplus to ₹1.59 crore. This includes contribution of ₹1020 crore under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation , ₹ 42.82 crore under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission and ₹ 678.47 crore the Smart Cities Mission.

Though the estimated budget for the Periyar drinking water project was set at ₹ 1,150 crore, the intervention of the Asian Development Bank slashed it to ₹ 1,020 crore. Smart City works costing a total of ₹ 678.47 crore were part of the agenda for completion, said the Commissioner.

Mr. Visakan and officials of the engineering department said that construction of a bridge on Kuruvikkaran Salai and a flyover connecting Lakeview Road with Anna Nagar on a total expenditure of ₹ 64 crore would begin after the general election.

The Commissioner said that incomplete underground drainage works under JNNURM scheme worth ₹ 48.82 crore had been approved through funds from State government and TN Urban Finance and Infrastructure Development Corporation .

Answering questions on the poor quality of roads, the Commissioner said that of the ₹ 25 crore allocated under the Tamil Nadu Urban Road Infrastructure Fund, 50% of the works had been completed. “The rest will be completed soon,” he said.

Mr. Visakan said that a multi-storey building would be constructed at a cost of ₹ 5 crore with the Infrastructure Gap Filling Fund and the Corporation’s General Fund. A total of 54 houses would be built for sanitary workers at Avaniapuram.
