Madurai climbs up five spots in Plus Two ranking in State

Six government schools and two Corporation schools record cent percent pass in Madurai district

With the pass percentage rising to 93.64% from 92.46%, Madurai district, which was at the 17the position in the State last year, climbed to reach 12th position in the Plus Two examinations the results of which were announced on Friday.

A total of 37,603 students appeared for the examination of whom 35,212 passed. As in the previous years, girls outperformed boys by 4% - 18,861 girls passed the exam, while 16,351 boys cleared the exam.

According to the School Education department, 151 schools secured 100% pass. It is interesting to note that two of them -YMCA- Kadakinaru and Indian Association for Blind - were special schools.

Corporation schools registered a sharp spike in pass percentage as it rose from 93.32% in 2018 to 96.68%. Two schools declared 100% pass. Out of the 65 higher secondary government schools in the district, six recorded cent percent pass - 85.81% of the students passed while it was 85.20% last year.

A total of 32 visually impaired students, 32 hearing impaired and 81 other differently abled students passed the exams with flying colours.

The total marks was 600, while it was 1,200 marks earlier.

As many as 100 students scored centum in Computer Science and 62 in Accountancy. Surprisingly, only two students secured centum in Mathematics, Political Science, Chemistry, Botany, Statistics and Theory.

Topper’s wish

J. Shabana, a student of Navalar Somasundara Bharathiyar Corporation Higher Secondary School, was among the highest scorers in Corporation schools with a total of 583. A student of Commerce and Computer Science, she wants to become a Chartered Accountant. Her father A. Jahir Hussain, a petty shop owner, said his daughter always studied well and he would ensure that she continued her education.

Her Headmistress P. Meenakshi said it was a major achievement for a student from a Corporation school to get three centums. Hers is also one of the two schools to get centum results. “Apart from tests, monitoring and evening review sessions, the teachers pitched in and prepared snacks for students. It was a learning experience for all,” she said.

Collector S. Natarajan said he enforced the concept of an hour’s unit test between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. every day to ensure students prepared well. “Our aim is to be in the top five districts next year with more rigorous coaching,” he said.
