The Madurai district court on Thursday sentenced a man from Usilampatti to life on the charge of murdering a relative in a fit of rage.

Principal District Judge A. Nazeema Banu sentenced A. Deivam to life and imposed a fine of ₹1,000 on the charge of murdering V. Karthik Raja with whom he shared a family dispute. On April 14, 2014, Deivam was said to have confronted Karthik Raja over the dispute. Following an altercation, Deivam picked up an iron rod and hit Karthik Raja on his head. He was rushed to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Delivering the sentence, the judge brushed aside the argument that the man died due to lack of treatment.

The Usilampatti police altered the FIR from Section 307 (Attempt to murder) to Section 302 (Murder) of the Indian Penal Code after the man succumbed to his injuries the following day.
