Family members and friends of a murdered Dalit quarry worker, L. Kumar, held a demonstration, raising slogans against the police and the district administration, in protest against the delay in arresting the main accused, here on Monday. They alleged that though it had been 26 days since he was killed on his way to work for raising questions against the functioning of the quarry located in T. Kallupatti, the main accused in the case were yet to be caught.

A functionary of Moovendar Puli Padai, J. Bhaskar, said that Kumar was walking on his way to work at 9.50 p.m. when he was brutally murdered. Officials at the T. Kallupatti police station had registered a case under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code and nabbed four people.

“The police, however, have not arrested four of the main accused in the case,” he said. His wife, K. Selvi, who wrote a petition to Collector T.S. Rajasekar made similar claims. She added that the police should have also taken into account Kumar’s caste and registered a case under the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

“We want the district administration to intervene in order to get justice,” she said.
