Improving the green cover in the hill station alone was not enough, but keeping the environment clean was more important, said Collector T.G. Vinay here on Saturday.

Launching a solid waste management programme, the State government’s ambitious project here at Vilpatti in association with Sneha, an NGO, he said the residents’ role was vital for its success.

Officials and the government may provide infrastructure. The NGOs may educate and disseminate the features. However, it was the people who have to cooperate to make the project a real success.

The residents have to dispose of the garbage by segregating it as bio-degradable and non bio-degradable waste. For this purpose, the local body has provided collection bins in green and red shade. Now, it was for the people to use them effectively and not litter waste on the public space. Every day, a place like Vilpatti turned close to 4000 kg of waste. The government was keen on establishing compost yards which would produce wealth.

The power generation would not only improve the quality of life but also keep the environment safe and spread the concept of pollution-free Kodaikanal, the Collector said.

The technical know-how was in place and the infrastructure for solid waste management would be available in about two months. Volunteers have been trained and for every 150 families, one volunteer was provided. Similarly, for every 300 dwellings tricycle/pushcart was available for collection. In all, Vilpatti has 29 volunteers and 18 pushcarts, he said.

Project Director (District Rural Development Agency) Kavita, RDO (Kodaikanal) in-charge Sivakumar, Sneha technical consultant Krishnan, BDO Mahendran among others participated. The solid waste management programme would be launched in other panchayats in the hill station soon, the officials said.
