A P J Mohamed Muthu Meera Maraikayar, elder brother of late president APJ Abdul Kalam, celebrated his 103rd birthday by cutting a cake with family members, relatives and friends at ‘House of Kalam’ in Rameswaram on Tuesday.

Assisted by his daughter APJM Nazeema, the centenarian cut the cake in a simple and brief function as the family members, friends and well wishers clapped and wished him many more happy returns of the day.

There was not much of celebration this year as there was a bereavement in the family a fortnight ago, Ms Nazeema said. “As vappa was unwell and could not sit for long, we had a brief and simple function attended by family members and friends and relatives,” she said.

As usual, the centenarian was filled with the memories of his younger brother and rued that he (Mr Kalam) was no more, she said. When she told him around 4 a.m. that today was his birthday, Mr Maraikayar just shook his head and prayed, she said. He was hospitalised last month after he fell ill and was doing good now.

As part of the birthday celebration, ‘Dr APJ Abdul Kalam International Foundation (AKIF)’ presented ‘En Vazhvil Thirukkural’ (Couplets of Saint Poet Thiruvalluvar in my life), a book of Mr. Kalam to the students of ‘Mandapam Panchayat Union Middle School Number 1’, the alma mater of Mr. Kalam. The foundation also planted 103 saplings on the school premises, APMJ Sheik Saleem, foundation trustee and grand nephew of Mr. Kalam said.
