For the first time, Black-headed Bunting, a migratory bird from Europe, has been sighted in the State.

The bird was spotted at Sivarakottai near here on Wednesday. Another passerine bird, Red-Headed Bunting, too was sighted at the same spot.

“I found these three birds (two Red-headed Bunting and one Black-headed Bunting) with a distinct look among a huge flock of Baya Weavers at the site,” said Raveendran Natarajan, 52, a nature-lover of Tirumangalam.

The Buntings migrate from Europe during winters and land in northern India via Iran.

“At the most, these birds are usually sighted in northern parts of Karnataka. The Red-headed Bunting has been sighted in Kerala in the last few years. But this is for the first time, the Black-headed Bunting has been sighted in Tamil Nadu,” Mr. Raveendran, an electronics engineer by profession, told The Hindu.

Similarly, sightings of the Red-Headed Bunting has been recorded at Dharapuram and in Tirunelveli district in the last three months.

The birds, which feed on grains, may have been attracted by large-scale cholam that is under harvest in Sivarakottai, Mr. Raveendran said .

Sivarakottai, where rain-fed millet farming has been going on for several decades, has also been host to other foreign migratory birds such as Syberian Stonechats, Blue Throats and Olive-backed Pipits that have been sighted in the last five years, the bird-lover added.
